In 1983, I was hired as the first staff person to document African American history in Prince George’s County for the History Division of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. During that first year. My primary responsibility was to research the history of African American communities, families, early leaders, churches and other aspects of community life from slavery through reconstruction, and the early 20th century.
The following profiles were featured in one of the first information packets I produced that highlighted some of the work I did.
